It's been 20 years, but Jewel is finally letting the world know she used to date Sean Penn. Who knew?
In her new memoir, "Never Broken," the 41-year-old reveals she and the Oscar winner were hot and heavy in the mid '90s, while he was on a break from Robin Wright, with whom he already had two children.
Shortly after appearing on the Conan O'Brien's show in 1995, the "Foolish Game" singer says she was contacted by Penn.
"One day my dad came to find me, saying 'Jewel, you must be getting some kooky fans out there in the Lower 48. Some guy just prank-called and said he was Sean Penn,'" the Alaska raised star wrote. "'No sh--,' I said, chuckling. 'What did you do?'"
While her father wound up hanging up on the Hollywood vet, Sean was persistent and continued to contact her.
Eventually, Jewel agreed to write a song for the soundtrack of his film The Crossing Guardand their relationship slowly moved on from being strictly professional.
"We spoke on the phone a lot and he was a fantastic flirt and I did not mind one bit," she continued. "But I was no fool and knew I was most likely a trifle to him. I intended to give him no such conquest. I put that man through his paces and he took it in stride. He began to court me in earnest, following me around on tour, acting as my de facto roadie."
But the up-and-coming pop beauty was still not used to the spotlight and kept their affair very lowkey.
"I moved very slowly with him but he was a persistent and inventive suitor, and I enjoyed it immensely," she recalls in her book. "I kept our burgeoning relationship very quiet."
She added: "I enjoyed Sean and would eventually fall in love, but I did not go around holding hands or trying to be seen or noticed."
The romance would flicker out in just months. The following year, in 1996, Sean and Robin reconciled and married. They would eventually divorce in 2010.
Meanwhile, Jewel would go on to marry rodeo cowboy Ty Murray in 2008. After welcoming a son in 2011, the pair announced their split last year.
