It's been over 20 years since he allegedly married late singer Aaliyah when she was just 15, but R.Kelly still won't talk about it.
In a new GQ interview, the 49-year-old does admit to having been "in love" with the R&B diva-in-training, but remained vague as to what exactly that meant.
"Well, there’s a lot of ways to be in love with a person. I was in love with my grandfather, you know. But yeah, I would say I was in love with Aaliyah just like I was in love with anybody else. But in a different, friend type of way."
Adding to the general speculation that they were definitely more than just friends, the "Trapped in the Closet" crooner also added that he believes the then underage songstress was in love with him too.
The pair caused quite the controversy after he allegedly illegally married the rising star when she was 15 and he was 27 in 1994. It was around the same time that Kelly produced Aaliyah's curiously titled debut album Age Ain't Nothing But a Number.
While the marriage was said to have been annulled the following year at the insistence of Aaliyah's livid family, neither ever spoke of the union again.
When asked to comment about marrying the "Rock the Boat" singer, R.Kelly kept it ambiguous as usual.
“Well, because of Aaliyah’s passing, as I’ve always said, out of respect for her mother who’s sick and her father who’s passed, I will never have that conversation with anyone. Out of respect for Aaliyah, and her mother and father who has asked me not to personally. But I can tell you I loved her, I can tell you she loved me, we was very close. We were, you know, best best best best friends."
In 1996, R.Kelly married his former backup dancer, Andrea Kelly, with whom he had three children. They divorced in 2009.
On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah died in a plane crash at the age of 22.
