2004 - current

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi reportedly first met through mutual friends back in 2001.

While sparks didn’t fly initially, Portia felt an intense chemistry upon seeing the talk show host a few years later in 2004. "I ran into Ellen at a photo shoot and she took my breath away. That had never happened to me in my life, where I saw somebody and [experienced] all of those things you hear about in songs and read about in poetry. My knees were weak,” she revealed in an interview.

They officially started dating after attending VH1’s Big In ’04 Awards show in December 2004. For the next year and a half, the power duo remained strong while keeping their relationship as private as possible.

Although there had been even rumors claiming NBC had discouraged the talented comedian from discussing her personal life on the hit daytime program, Ellen made sure to thank her girlfriend after winning Outstanding Talk Show Host at the 2006 Daytime Emmys by proclaiming: “Portia, I love you.”

On May 16th 2008, after the California Supreme Court overthrew the ban on same-sex marriage, Ellen announced on her show that she and Portia were going to make it official and walk down the aisle together.

Three months later, on August 16th, the ladies wed in front of 19 guests in an intimate ceremony at their Beverly Hills home.

The following year, Ellen made it clear she and Portia had no plans to add to their family. “I don't think we're going to have kids,” she said, before adding, “We're very happily married without children.”

In August 2010, the Arrested Development actress went with tradition and filed paperwork to legally take her wife’s name and became Portia DeGeneres. For work purposes, she would remain Portia de Rossi.

Three years later, Ellen and Portia faced the fate of all celeb couples and weathered the inevitable breakup rumors as reports surfaced saying a divorce was imminent. In December 2013, Ellen refuted the tabloid gossip during an episode of her show by stating: “There’s not one ounce of truth to any of it. I’m very happily married.”

While the speculation continued, Ellen would once again address the split rumors in a March 2014 People magazine cover story by emphasizing that the couple’s marriage was healthier than ever. “The truth is, and this is corny, I fall more in love Portia all the time,” she disclosed.

Seven months later, the A-list stars joined forces to dispel more false stories, but this time it was of the baby variety. During an appearance on her wife’s talk show, Portia made it clear that the couple still had no plans to have children.

Exactly ten years after they first began dating, on December 1, 2014, the happily married couple showed further proof of their wedded bliss by sharing a snap cozied up together on the beach.
